Last night as I slumbered I had a strange dream
One that seemed to bring distant friends near
I dreamed of the face of people I loved
I awoke with a heart full of cheer...

Presenting The Cat With Hands to [community profile] paradisa:

Dates: Friday, October 19th and Saturday, October 20th
Genre: Horror, Body Horror, "Stop the Invading Evil"
Run by: Jenn

Based off of the short film, The Cat With Hands.

Cats are peculiar creatures. At once they are disdainful of humans while still craving their attentions, their affections, their attachments. Anyone who has ever interacted with a cat knows that lofty walk, that dismissive look, that demanding meow. You would know it even if you'd never even seen a real, live cat. Even the most loving of felines is guilty of scorning the humans charged with their care, and the worst of them are spitting, hissing hellions. But even then, even those cats would look angelic compared to a certain cat.

No one knows where it came from, or what it wants -- not in Paradisa, anyway. All anyone in Paradisa knows is that it is here and it wants, and it is not to be underestimated. It is the kind of thing one fears when one looks into a dark void and feels something staring back, even if there is nothing to be seen and nothing to be heard. It, of course, is the Cat With Hands.

"A cat with hands?" I hear your scoff. "All cats have hands, they're called paws."

"No," I say. "Hands. The cat with human hands."

You seemed skeptical, and I felt a twinge of dismay.

"Cats don't have human hands."

That was, of course, the last time we saw you alive. I still remember the twist in my gut when we saw your body, stretched taught by rigor mortis, back arched in desperation, having been suffocated by your own skin.

If only you'd listened.

ROUGH SCHEDULE

Time Estimate Event Links
Thursday Evening (Set-up only) A group of characters decide to go for a hike (handful of volunteers needed) and discover an old well in the woods. It is long grown over, but the winch and bucket are still intact. Someone pulls it up, and to their surprise, a mangy-looking grey cat darts out and flees into the trees. What's so bizarre about this cat? Well, it looked like it had huge, deformed hands... Link
Friday Morning-Afternoon Some body parts start going "missing", leaving victims without. Victims report seeing the animal, which seems to be docile until they get too close. As the epidemic is not yet known, it was impossible to predict that the cat would have stolen their body parts...
Link
Friday Evening Residents have caught on to what's going on. Later victims may get overpowered or chased down by the creature, which still acts docile until it suddenly attacks without provocation. A townsperson is killed when the cat takes his torso. The residents plan to hunt it down and terminate it.
Link
Saturday Morning-Afternoon More attacks, and by late afternoon, the animal is now quite human in appearance. Finding it will get difficult. A group of characters decides to excavate the well to see if any information can be gleaned from there.
Link
Saturday Evening (Conclusion) The supernatural hunters find the animal and exterminate it. The well explorers make a discovery that tells them about the creature's origin. But even with the creature taken care of, how will the survivors get their limbs back?
Link
Sunday Morning (Wind-Down) Residents -- but more specifically, the survivors -- start making peace with the animal's spirit. Link

BODY PART VOLUNTEERS

I'm going to need volunteers for body part theft. Just a few, as this is a short plot, but more people will inevitably get involved via CR, extermination teams, etc. There are a couple conditions to signing up as a volunteer, though:

1. Your character will suffer some sort of potentially-traumatizing body horror, and depending on how it goes, someone may die. The cat will be stealing a body part (or two!); the specifics will range base on what is stolen, so some are bound to be a bit more "what the fuck" than others. Even so, I want to find volunteers interested in writing it out and playing with the concept, because there's nothing interesting about characters facing that stuff with a resigned sort of "oh that's weird."

2. You need at least 2 major CR mates to comment to your volunteering comment saying you've discussed this with them and confirm that it's okay. Obviously you should inform everyone that may be affected by your character getting HANDSED, but I want to confirm that your CR is interested in participating.

3. You must be available at some point either Friday night (October 19th) or Saturday morning (October 20th) to play out your character getting CAT WITH HANDSED. We can work with whatever you prefer.

4. Getting limbs back depends on how the character can make peace with the creature, in the end... if your character is liable to hold a grudge, getting them back might be a little bit more difficult.

That all said, if you wish to volunteer, please comment with your CHARACTER NAME, EMAIL, and DESCRIPTION OF YOUR CHARACTER'S BODY PART (including any supernatural/biological abilities!) as well as indicating which part you want. Then have your CR comment showing their support.

For the most part I am going to try to do this on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you will not be available this weekend, please let someone else give it a whirl.

GENERAL VOLUNTEERS

Just about everyone in the plot can fit somewhere in here; see chart below for details.

VOLUNTEER CHART

GENERAL VOLUNTEERS
Needed Characters Directive
Hikers ? Plan hike a day or two in advance, head out on Thursday, and discover well on Thursday night. Mention it on journal somewhere so the whole castle can be informed.
Supernatural Hunters ? Assess threat, hunt down cat and dispatch it.
Doctors ? Assess and look after victims.
Cat Lovers and Haters ? Inventory of cats in Paradisa. Determine whether it's a resident's cat or something from the castle. Potential conflict over whether to round up all the local cats. Probably the best choice for people who want to be involved in the plot but don't have time for more plot-heavy involvement.
Well Explorers ? Enter the well, and see what can be discovered there. Drain the well and excavate it.
BODY PART THEFT
Stolen Effect Time Stolen Volunteer Bio Info
Face The cat steals a face. The victim's face becomes a blank, fleshy expanse with no facial features. This, of course, means they cannot breathe... if they do not want to die, there will need to be planing ahead to have someone be really close-by to emergency-trach them. ? ? ?
Feet The cat steals a pair of feet. The victim's legs end in nubs at the ankles. ? ? ?
Right Arm The cat steals an arm. One shoulder is just a nub. ? ? ?
Left Arm The cat steals an arm. One shoulder is just a nub. ? ? ?
Right Leg The cat steals a leg. One hip just ends in a nub. ? ? ?
Left Leg The cat steals a leg. One hip just ends in a nub. ? ? ?
Torso The cat steals the torso of a man from town. He dies from organ failure, his heart and lungs having vanished. ? Old Man Grey An old man's torso, burly with a rotund belly.
Pelvis The cat steals a pelvis. The legs are still attached, but it's just fleshy ugliness pooling around the victim's middle. If they move too much, they might damage something. ? ? ?
Tongue The last to go... the cat steals a tongue, leaving the victim unable to speak properly. ? ? ?

Summary: With just over a week until Halloween, Paradisa seems to be getting in the spirit: a cat with human hands appears out of an abandoned well. At first it just seems like a charmingly creepy little creature, but then its "plan" is made clear: it is slowly collecting human body parts, and the residents have plenty of those. Can the residents destroy it before it can walk amongst them unnoticed, unstoppable?

Definite need for: In character, we will need victims for body part theft, doctors/physicians, supernatural hunters, and some cat lovers. Out of character, we will need volunteers to play victims who are really interested in playing up the body horror element. I also want to give residents a chance to be efficient, with such a short plot... because after all, if they don't nip this in the bud, people will start losing their lives, rather than their limbs ;)
